Facial Rejuvenation and Positive Aging Plans
The earlier you start, the better off you will be. We know that regular health habits like exercise and dental care are important for our overall health and quality of life, so why not apply this same principle to our skin?
Prevention
Prevention is the first step to healthy skin as we mature.
As with many other health related issues, prevention is key. At Shine MD, we believe this starts early in life. That is why we offer medical access and integrated treatment plans for common skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, pigmentation and skin lesion removals. Sun protection and sunscreen are one of the most important, easiest and cost effective interventions that can dramatically change the way we age. It is never too late to start wearing sunscreen. Healthy habits and avoidance of smoking also help to improve our skin quality and longevity. When skin issues are addressed early, the impact of these conditions on the long term health of your skin can be minimized and help you develop control and confidence in your skin journey.
Correction
Sometimes, our skin condition is not easily controlled or life factors have not allowed us the time, resources or emotional capacity to seek care. Some patients do not know where to start or who to trust. For whatever the reason, the most common concerns in facial rejuvenation are regarding fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, redness, volume loss and skin laxity. In order to meet the needs of our most common patient needs, Dr. Khurana has curated a collection of treatment options and first in class technology that can address your needs and cater to every skin type and demographic at any stage or age of your life.
Maintenance
Once you have put in the work to get closer to your goals, Shine MD is confident that we can support you in the maintenance of your skin. This can include an annual regimen of low intensity but high impact skin and laser treatments, skin care and sun protection and regular touch ups with your favorite injectable treatment such as Dysport, Dermal Fillers and Sculptra.
Building Your Treatment Plan
For most of our patients, this can feel daunting and overwhelming. We will always give you honest and thoughtful advice and move at your pace. Our patients are often relieved to know that there are many options available. Some patients like to go slowly and try one treatment at a time. Others like to advance their treatment plan quickly and coordinate different treatments and lasers in a short time to reach a particular goal. We are here to support you on your terms, in a safe, nurturing environment where we focus heavily on patient education and communication that is focused on understanding your goals and expectations.
Three Components To Your Facial Rejuvenation Plan
Primary Skin Concerns
Pigmentation
At Shine MD, we have skin care protocols and laser treatments that can address all kinds of pigmentation. Pigmentation comes in many different forms and can need different approaches, even in the same person.
Low Downtime Treatments
The Forever Young BBL is our first choice in treating sun spots and sun related pigmentation in light skinned patients who do not have melasma. The Forever Young BBL will also improve redness, rosacea and can treat small visible blood vessels.
Aerolase is an effective solution for treating both pigmentation and redness and is also safe in melasma patients. This laser is frequently recommended for patients with both pigmentation and rosacea who want a safe, pain free and no downtime option for treating their skin concerns.
The PicoSure Pro is our gold standard in treating pigment in patients with melasma and also for those with darker skin types. This award winning technology is the only laser that has achieved FDA clearance for treating melasma.
Microneedling with PRP is a safe and effective option for patients who want to improve pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles and may not want to do laser treatments.
Moderate Downtime Treatments
The Moxi and Halo laser are both resurfacing lasers that improve pigment and fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars. The Halo is one of our most popular lasers and the laser of choice for improving fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and acne scars while leaving your skin with a luminous glow. Both of these treatments can be combined with Forever Young BBL.

Redness
Redness in the form of rosacea can look very different from patient to patient. There are four types of rosacea. The two most common types seen in our practice are erythrotelangiectatic (ETR) rosacea and papulopustular rosacea. ETR rosacea consists mostly of redness and flushing. Papulopustular rosacea is commonly referred to as acne rosacea and can occur at any age or life stage. Both of these forms of rosacea can cause visible vessels called telangiectasias that can be aesthetically bothersome.
At Shine MD, we understand how much the presence of redness, flushing, acne and visible vessels can impact your quality of life. Physician led management of rosacea will often include topical prescription creams, oral medication if needed and skin care recommendations. Rosacea patients often have sensitive skin, so best to avoid active skin care products that contain retinols, salicylic acid and other chemical exfoliants.
Laser treatments are a cornerstone of rosacea treatment and lead to improved symptoms control and decreased redness. The Forever Young BBL is an ideal treatment for lighter skin types and for those patients who do not have melasma. Aerolase works just as well as BBL and is used for patients who have very inflamed skin, for those with darker skin tones and for patients with melasma and a tan.
Fine Lines & Texture
Skin texture usually encompasses fine lines, wrinkles, peri-oral rhytides (commonly called smoker’s lines), acne scars and pore size. At Shine MD, we have a variety of options for fine lines and wrinkles. Neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport relax your muscles and smooth the appearance of forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet. This treatment has the capacity to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and reduce the progression of lines in the same area. This is considered preventive and corrective.
Skinboosters are a hyaluronic acid filler that is very soft and fine. This product is unique in its composition, allowing it to be injected just beneath and into the layers of your skin to provide a more immediate improvement of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars. This product is particularly effective at improving small fine lines in the forehead, around the lips and near the eyes (crow’s feet). It is also a great option for the immediate improvement of acne scars. It can be used in conjunction with Sculptra or used as a stand alone treatment before a big event. A series of three treatments, one month apart is ideal. Skinboosters have been shown to improve the collagen network and induce remodeling of the skin, so, in some ways, they create permanent or long lasting improvements.
Sculptra is an injectable biostimulation treatment that activates your skin’s natural power to produce collagen. Sculptra is made of a molecule called Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA). It is mixed with sterile water and injected under your skin to stimulate your skin’s natural collagen production pathways. The results appear over the three to six months following your treatment You will see a gradual, global improvement in volume, skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles and skin luminosity. Sculptra is one of our most commonly performed treatments for both facial rejuvenation and acne scarring and is research proven to improve skin quality and cheek wrinkles.
Laser treatments such as Forever Young Broad Band Light, PicoSure Pro and Aerolase deliver different types of energy to the skin and stimulate collagen production while also correcting other issues such as pigmentation and redness. These treatments can be tailored to your specific concerns and have relatively low pain and low downtime.
The Halo Hybrid Laser is the most common skin resurfacing laser used at Shine MD It improves fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars while also improving pigmentation. The Halo Hybrid Laser is a dual wavelength laser and also improves skin laxity and collagen production. The Contour TRL by Sciton, (laser peel) can be delivered at different depths and target areas such as crow’s feet and perioral lines. Your downtime for this one will depend on the depth of the peel and has the power to target and remove unwanted lines and wrinkles with a single treatment.
Radiofrequency microneedling such as Potenza and Morpheus8 can simultaneously tighten and tone the skin while working to improve skin texture. Potenza RadioFrequency Microneedling can be applied to the skin with a fusion tip, enabling deeper delivery of skin plumping hyaluronic acid into target areas. SkinPen Microneedling is also an effective, lower cost and low downtime treatment that can be performed on all skin types, all year round.
Skin Laxity & Volume Loss
Volume Loss
Volume Loss is one of the most common concerns brought up by patients as they mature. As we get older the quality of our collagen begins to decrease and often presents as flattening of the cheeks and tired looking under eye area. Some patients notice lower face volume loss and feel like the decreased supporting the corners of their lips leading to a “sad” or “unhappy” resting look.
These concerns can be immediately improved with the use of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are a very effective and safe approach to restoring volume loss.
Sculptra is an injectable biostimulation treatment that activates your skin’s natural power to produce collagen leading to a gradual, global improvement in volume, skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles and skin luminosity.
Skin Laxity
Loose skin in the eye area, nasolabial folds and lower face is very common as we mature. The best treatment to improve nasoalabial folds, jawline, jowls and double chin is Accutite. This is an in office procedure that consists of radiofrequency assisted lipolysis (RFAL). It tightens skin around the under eye, nasolabial folds, lower face and neck. The treatment requires local anesthetic. We recommend that you allow at least one week for social downtime. Patient’s can experience swelling which is related to the amount of anaethesia and fluid that is injected.
Accutite is commonly combined with Morpheus8, radiofrequency microneedling to further augment your results and give you further improvement while improving skin texture. Potenza radiofrequency microneedling is also offered at Shine MD and has the special benefit of being well tolerated having fusion tips that can enhance delivery of topical agents such as platelet rich plasma, Sculptra and hyaluronic acid.
