Facial Veins

Facial veins, also known as spider veins or telangiectasias, are blood vessels that can become visible under the skin. When visible, spider veins appear as thin red, blue, or purple lines branching out from each other. Facial veins are usually most visible on the nose, cheeks, and chin, but similar lesions also occur frequently in the legs.

While facial veins are generally harmless and do not cause any pain or discomfort, they may be aesthetically bothersome and can make people feel self-conscious. The physicians at Shine MD offer facial vein treatment to fade the appearance of spider veins and assist our clients in feeling more comfortable and confident.

What Causes Facial Veins?

The tiny veins in the face are called capillaries, and they are located right under the surface of the skin. When capillaries dilate or become damaged, they bulge and darken, and can become visible through the skin.

Many things can influence the development of facial veins, including:

Aging

As we age, our veins weaken and our skin becomes thinner. Not only are veins more likely to dilate or become damaged, but they are also more visible under the thinner layer of skin.

Sun Damage

The harmful UV rays that are emitted by the sun can damage the skin and cause blood vessels to enlarge, leading to visible spider veins. Sun exposure is one of the most common causes of facial veins, and it is crucial to always wear high-quality sunscreen while outdoors.

Genetics

Facial veins are more likely to occur in people whose family members experience facial veins.

Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions can increase the risk that someone will develop facial veins, including rosacea. Spider veins are also more common in pregnant women due to the heightened levels of estrogen during pregnancy.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol can temporarily dilate blood vessels. Over time, frequent alcohol consumption can cause the capillaries to dilate for a longer period of time, leading to more visible redness in the skin.

Facial Veins Treatment at Shine MD

At Shine MD, we offer research-based Broadband Light treatments that are effective at treating visible blood vessels and redness in the skin. The light released from the Forever Young BBL laser is absorbed by the blood vessels, destroying the pigment. This treatment is a well-tolerated solution to spider veins that has little downtime.
