Excessive Sweating | Vancouver & Surrey BC

Excessive Sweating (Hyperhydrosis)

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a condition that causes the body to sweat more than necessary, sometimes completely unrelated to heat or exercise. The condition can be difficult to deal with, as it can not only cause physical discomfort, but also social anxiety and embarrassment. At Shine MD, we offer treatment for hyperhidrosis to help our patients reduce their symptoms and feel more comfortable and confident.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

Our bodies produce sweat for a reason, and it is incredibly beneficial for our survival. When our body temperature rises, our nervous system tells our sweat glands to begin producing sweat. The sweat then evaporates off of the skin, cools the body, and prevents overheating.

The most common form of hyperhidrosis occurs when the nerves that communicate with the sweat glands are hyperactive, and tell the body to produce more sweat than necessary. This type of excessive sweating may be hereditary, as it occurs more commonly in people with family members who also have a history of excessive sweating.

Neuromodulators for Hyperhidrosis

Neuromodulators such as Botox® and Dysport® can temporarily decrease the function of sweat glands in the area of injection. Common treatment areas include the underarms and palms of the hands. After the neuromodulator injection, the medication takes two to four days to become effective. Each treatment lasts for three to nine months. The necessary dosage varies from 50 to 150 units of Botox® per area per side being treated.

Some insurance plans may provide coverage for treatment. The Botox® Access Program ensures reimbursement coverage of your first Botox® treatment of the underarms if your health insurance does not provide coverage. Injection fees apply.
