Understanding Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process. Over time, our skin loses collagen and elasticity, causing small creases to appear, especially in areas we move most, like the forehead, around the eyes, and around the mouth.
While these changes are normal, many people feel their wrinkles make them look older or more tired than they truly feel. At Shine MD Vancouver, we offer personalized, science-backed treatments designed to soften existing wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming. Our patients often tell us they feel more confident and refreshed when they see smoother, more radiant skin in the mirror.
What Causes Wrinkles?
Wrinkles develop due to a mix of natural aging, genetics, and environmental factors. Our skin contains two vital proteins, collagen and elastin, that give it structure and resilience. As we age, collagen production slows, and existing fibers break down, leading to thinner, less elastic skin.
The dermis (inner skin layer) becomes thinner, and cell turnover slows. This results in weaker skin that’s more prone to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.
Accelerated Aging from Sun Exposure
One of the most common causes of premature wrinkles is sun exposure. Ultraviolet (UV) rays damage collagen and elastin fibers, speeding up the aging process and contributing to sunspots, pigmentation, and uneven texture. Without daily sun protection, wrinkles can form earlier and deepen faster.
Other Contributing Factors
- Repeated facial expressions (frowning, squinting, smiling)
- Skin type (dry or fair skin shows lines earlier)
- Stress and lack of sleep
- Environmental pollution
- Smoking or nicotine exposure
How to Prevent Wrinkles
While aging is inevitable, you can slow down wrinkle formation with a few key lifestyle habits and professional care.
- Protect Your Skin from the Sun. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily, even in cloudy weather. Pair with hats and sunglasses for added protection.
- Hydrate and Nourish Your Skin. Keep skin hydrated inside and out. Choose skincare rich in hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants to maintain firmness and moisture.
- Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol. Both habits break down collagen and reduce blood flow to the skin, speeding up the aging process.
- Manage Stress & Get Enough Sleep. Stress hormones like cortisol degrade collagen. Prioritize rest to help your skin renew naturally.
- Invest in Preventative Skin Treatments. Professional treatments can rejuvenate and strengthen skin at the cellular level. At Shine MD Vancouver, we offer neuromodulators, laser therapy, microneedling, and RF microneedling to boost collagen and prevent deeper wrinkles.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles in Skin of Colour
Resurfacing works by injuring the skin in a controlled way and letting it heal into something better. In melanin-rich skin, that injury carries a real risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when the device, the settings, or the aftercare are wrong. This is why device selection matters more here than almost anywhere else in aesthetics.
Our approach is deliberate rather than default. Aerolase, Morpheus8, and Potenza are our usual starting points for deeper skin tones, and Moxi and Halo are versatile across a wide range of skin types. Ablative CO₂ resurfacing is reserved for lighter skin tones, while the lighter Precision Peel broadens CO₂ suitability to more patients. Where pigment is part of the picture, a pigment blocker and daily sunscreen are part of the treatment plan rather than an afterthought.
Microneedling & RF Microneedling in Vancouver
Microneedling boosts collagen by creating microscopic channels that trigger your body’s natural healing response. RF Microneedling combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy for deeper tissue remodeling and tightening.
Benefits include:
- Smoother fine lines and wrinkles
- Improved tone and texture
- Enhanced firmness and mild contouring
Combination Therapy for Comprehensive Results
For optimal rejuvenation, we often recommend combining neuromodulators with laser or RF microneedling treatments. This synergy smooths surface lines, improves texture, and prevents future signs of aging, creating naturally refreshed results that last.
Treatments We Offer for Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Why Vancouver Patients Choose Shine MD
Wrinkle treatment is not a menu of devices. It is a series of judgement calls about which device, at which setting, for which skin type. This is a collaborative process between you and the team at Shine MD and will often include physician based injectable treatments and energy based resurfacing.
Dr. Mona Khurana holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Practical Dermatology with Distinction from Cardiff University and is a Sciton Luminary. Her clinical focus is the treatment of skin of colour, and that focus shapes how every patient here is treated, not only patients with deeper skin tones. It means we begin with how your skin is likely to respond, rather than with the device we happen to own.
Our clinic is on Main Street in Vancouver, and we see patients from across the Lower Mainland, including Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver, and Surrey.

Frequently Asked Questions
What laser is best for resurfacing fine lines and wrinkles?
Both the Halo™ hybrid laser and the eCO2 fractional CO₂ laser are excellent resurfacing options at Shine MD. Halo is a versatile choice that suits a wide range of skin types with moderate downtime. CO₂ offers powerful resurfacing for lighter skin types, with settings carefully chosen to match your downtime capacity and your goals.
What is a Precision Peel?
The Precision Peel is a lighter, more superficial CO₂ resurfacing treatment performed with our eCO2 laser. It refreshes skin texture and restores a healthy glow with minimal downtime — typically about 1–2 days and its gentler approach makes it suitable for a wider range of skin types. It’s an excellent option for early signs of aging and overall skin renewal.
Is laser resurfacing safe for deeper skin tones?
Yes, we choose the right laser for your skin type. The Halo hybrid laser and Moxi are versatile across a wide range of skin tones, and for deeper tones we may also recommend Aerolase, Morpheus8, or Potenza. Ablative CO₂ resurfacing is best suited to lighter skin tones, while the lighter Precision Peel broadens CO₂ suitability to more skin types.
How long is recovery after laser resurfacing?
Recovery depends on the depth of treatment. A Precision Peel typically involves about 1–2 days of visible healing and Moxi about 3–5 days, while a Halo treatment involves about 4–7 days and deeper CO₂ resurfacing about 5–7 days. We plan every session around your skin type and schedule.
What treatments work best for fine lines versus deep wrinkles?
Dynamic lines from movement respond well to Botox® and Dysport®, while etched lines and texture improve with resurfacing lasers like Halo and CO₂ and with RF microneedling. Most patients see the best results from a personalized combination.
How long do neuromodulator results last?
Most patients notice their lines softening within a few days, with the full effect at about two weeks. Results typically last three to four months, though this varies with the area treated, the dose used, and how strongly you use those muscles. Many patients find that treating consistently over time means results hold longer between sessions.
Can I combine neuromodulators with laser resurfacing?
Yes, and most of our comprehensive plans do exactly that. Neuromodulators soften the lines that come from movement, while resurfacing lasers and RF microneedling address the lines that have become etched into the skin’s surface. They solve different problems, so combining them usually produces a better result than either alone. Timing and sequencing are planned at your consultation.
Do I have to wait until fall to have laser resurfacing?
No. We perform ablative resurfacing year-round, including through the summer, provided you commit to diligent daily sun protection. Summer is simply a quieter season in Vancouver clinics, not a contraindication. If your lifestyle and timeline allow for the recovery, we would rather treat you now than have you wait unnecessarily.
