Medical-Grade Skincare for Acne and Acne Scarring

The Acne Clinic at Shine MD helps its patients create a comprehensive plan to manage their acne and/or acne scarring, including the selection of a personalized, at-home skincare regimen. You may be prescribed a retinol skin cream by one of the care providers at Shine MD for the treatment of acne. Retinols are very effective medications that help promote cell turnover, inhibit pigment production, and decrease sebum production and bacteria in the glands of the skin.
Because of the way they work, retinols are known to cause skin irritation.
Retinol Instructions for Use:
- Please start your retinol slowly.
- After washing your face at night, allow the area to dry.
- Apply a pea sized amount of retinol to your skin starting with your forehead, then nose, cheeks, and chin. Avoid the area around your eyes and mouth.
- Allow the retinol to absorb for about 20 minutes and then apply your serums and moisturizers to your skin.
- Use the retinol once per week for one week, twice a week for two weeks, and then three times per week for three weeks. Increase to nightly use as tolerated, though some people can only use the medication a few times a week.
- If skin irritation occurs, do not worry. Please give your skin a little break from the retinol and decrease the frequency of use to a level that is well tolerated by your skin.
- Please be aware that it takes about three months of regular retinol use to determine it’s effectiveness.
- Skin irritation is common and will decrease as your skin becomes accustomed to the retinol. Some retinol formulations are tolerated better than others depending on your skin type.
