What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags, medically known as acrochordons, are small, soft growths that protrude from the surface of the skin, typically attached by a thin, narrow stalk. They are entirely benign and one of the most common skin lesions seen in adults.

Skin tags can vary in size from a few millimeters to over a centimeter, and may be smooth or slightly irregular in texture. They are most frequently found in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing, including the neck, underarms (axillae), eyelids, groin, and beneath the breasts.

Although skin tags are harmless, many patients seek removal for cosmetic reasons, to alleviate discomfort from ongoing friction, or because a tag has become irritated, inflamed, or caught on jewelry or clothing.

Causes & Contributing Factors

Skin tags are thought to develop as a result of friction and skin-to-skin contact, though several additional factors are associated with their formation:

  • Age: Skin tags become more common with advancing age.
  • Weight: Individuals with higher body weight often develop skin tags in skin folds due to increased friction.
  • Genetics: A family history of skin tags increases the likelihood of developing them.
  • Hormonal changes: Skin tags may emerge or increase during pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations.
  • Metabolic conditions: Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes have been associated with a higher prevalence of skin tags.

Types of Skin Tags

While all skin tags share a broadly similar appearance, they can vary in their clinical presentation:

Small, Pedunculated Skin Tags.

The most common type: soft, flesh-colored growths attached to the skin by a narrow stalk. These respond very well to quick, precise removal with minimal healing time.

Larger or Broad-Based Skin Tags.

Some skin tags are larger or have a wider base. These may require a more tailored approach to ensure complete removal and an optimal cosmetic result. Very broad-based skin tags might require the placement of sutures at the base when removed.

Multiple Skin Tags

Many patients present with clusters of skin tags across a single area, or distributed across multiple areas such as the neck, axillae, or torso. At Shine MD, our physicians are experienced in efficiently treating multiple lesions in a single visit, with a strong focus on patient comfort and efforts to optimize healing.

Irritated or Inflamed Skin Tags

Tags that have been repeatedly caught on clothing or jewelry, or that occur in areas of chronic friction, may become irritated, tender, or inflamed. These are often removed both for comfort and to prevent ongoing trauma to the area.

When to See a Physician About a Skin Tag

Most skin tags are straightforward to diagnose and do not require further investigation.

At Shine MD, all lesions are assessed by a physician prior to any cosmetic or surgical intervention, ensuring accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan appropriate to your individual situation.

Skin Tag Removal: Treatment Options at Shine MD

At Shine MD, skin tag removal in Vancouver is performed by experienced physicians using advanced techniques that are safe, precise, and focused on patient comfort and optimal cosmetic outcomes.

Electrocautery with the Surgitron

Electrocautery is the gold standard for skin tag removal and the most commonly used technique at Shine MD. It uses a precisely controlled electrical current to gently remove and cauterize the tag at its base, providing clean, effective removal with minimal bleeding and excellent cosmetic results. Treatment is quick; most skin tags can be removed in a matter of seconds, and healing is typically straightforward.

This technique is safe for patients with skin of color.

Treatment of Multiple Skin Tags

Patients presenting with multiple skin tags can have all lesions treated efficiently in a single session. Our physicians are experienced in managing widespread skin tags safely and systematically, whether confined to one area or distributed across larger surface regions such as the neck, underarms, or torso. A comprehensive treatment plan is discussed in advance to ensure the best possible outcome.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

Your skin tag removal at Shine MD begins with a physician assessment to confirm the diagnosis and review your goals. Before any treatment is performed, the area is numbed with a local anesthetic (lidocaine) to ensure a comfortable, pain-free experience.

If you are nervous about the procedure or have a fear of needles, the team will offer you Ativan and/or laughing gas. The physicians will gently inject numbing medication in the area of treatment. Once the area is numb, the lesion will be removed with the electrocautery machine.

Following removal, a small superficial wound will be present at each treatment site. Aquaphor and a dressing will be applied to the site(s). A protective scab forms over the next few days as the skin heals, then gradually resolves to reveal smooth, clear skin.

You will be given a post care kit that includes skin care products, Aquaphor, dressings and post care instructions.

Recovery After Skin Tag Removal

Recovery following skin tag removal is typically quick and straightforward. Most patients experience initial healing within 5–7 days, during which mild redness, slight swelling, or light scabbing at the treated areas is completely normal.

Your skin’s response during recovery will vary depending on your skin type, as well as the size, depth, and location of the treated lesion. It’s important to understand that temporary skin changes—such as redness or pigmentation—are expected side effects of the treatment, not complications.

If multiple or larger areas are treated, you may prefer to plan your schedule accordingly, as visible healing may impact social or professional activities for a short period.

Activity & Aftercare Guidelines

To support optimal healing and minimize irritation:

  • Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and saunas for several days after treatment
  • Minimize prolonged moisture, sweating, and friction—especially in areas where skin folds are present
  • Keep treated areas clean and dry as they heal
  • Protect the skin with daily sunscreen and sun avoidance

What to Expect Based on Skin Type

  • Darker skin tones: Temporary post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkening of the treated area) may occur. This can be minimized with diligent sun protection, including sunscreen and sun avoidance. Targeted skincare and advanced laser treatments can help accelerate fading.
  • Lighter skin tones: You may notice temporary redness or pink discoloration (post-inflammatory erythema) at the treatment site. This is a normal part of healing and gradually resolves over time. The improvement can be accelerated with Broad Band Light (BBL) laser or Aerolase treatments.

Supporting Optimal Healing

To enhance your recovery and achieve the best possible results, Dr. Khurana may recommend:

  • Medical-grade skincare tailored to your skin type, specifically targeting pigmentation pathways
  • Laser treatments such as BroadBand Light (BBL) or Aerolase to reduce redness or pigmentation
  • Silicone gel sheets to support smooth healing and minimize discoloration

Long-Term Healing

While the surface of the skin heals quickly, deeper healing and collagen remodeling continue for up to one year after treatment. During this time, you’ll notice ongoing improvements in skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.

Before & After Care

Before Treatment

  • Avoid sun exposure on the area to be treated in the weeks leading up to your appointment
  • Inform your physician of any medications or medical conditions.

After Treatment

  • Keep the treated area clean and follow all wound care instructions provided by your clinician
  • Use recommended products, such as silicone gel sheets, to support healing and minimize redness or pigmentation
  • Protect the treated area from UV exposure using a broad-spectrum sunscreen once the skin has healed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Skin tags are entirely benign and pose no medical risk. They do not become cancerous and do not require removal from a health standpoint. At Shine MD, all lesions are evaluated by a physician before treatment to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

If you are certain that the lesion is a skin tag then no referral is required to book a consultation at Shine MD. You may contact the clinic directly to arrange an assessment with Dr. Khurana. The clinic team will ask you to send photos of the areas to ensure that you can be booked in for an elective lesion removal appointment. The physicians at Shine MD will assess your skin tags, confirm the diagnosis, and recommend the most appropriate removal approach based on your individual presentation and skin type. Consult and removal fees apply. If a biopsy is clinically indicated, the associated pathology costs may be covered by the Medical Services Plan of British Columbia (MSP).

Skin tag removal performed for cosmetic reasons is not covered by the Medical Services Plan of British Columbia. The starting cost of a single skin tag is $500 with additional fees per lesion or area. For larger areas where multiple lesions are present, your pricing will be determined by our team members after an in person or photo assessment.

No. All skin tag removal procedures at Shine MD are performed under local anesthesia (lidocaine), which fully numbs the treatment area before any instrument is used. Once the numbing is injected, patients do not experience discomfort during the procedure. A brief stinging sensation from the anesthetic injection itself is the most commonly reported experience.

Individual skin tags can be removed in a matter of seconds. For patients having multiple skin tags treated in a single session, the total appointment time depends on the number and location of the lesions. This is discussed in detail during your consultation, so you can plan accordingly.

Yes. At Shine MD, patients with multiple skin tags across one or several areas can have all lesions treated in a single visit. Our physicians are experienced in treating widespread skin tags on the neck, underarms, torso, and other locations systematically and efficiently, without compromising cosmetic precision.

Once a skin tag has been fully removed, it will be unlikely to recur in the same location. However, patients who are prone to developing skin tags may continue to form new ones in the same general areas over time, particularly where friction persists. This reflects an individual predisposition and is not related to the removal technique used.

The risk of scarring is low with the techniques used at Shine MD. Electrocautery and removal are specifically selected for their precision and minimal impact on surrounding tissue. As outlined above, post-inflammatory skin changes such as redness or pigmentation are a common and expected part of the healing process. Permanent textural scarring is unlikely

Yes. Shine MD has particular expertise in treating patients with skin of color. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkening of the treated area) is a temporary, known, and expected response in most patients with skin of color. This occurs as the skin heals and is a response to the treatment energy. While this is not harmful, it may take time to fade.

We take specific precautions to minimize pigmentation changes and support optimal healing. For patients who want faster improvement, we also offer optional post-treatment skincare and laser therapies to help even out skin tone. These additional treatments are elective and not included in the initial lesion removal fee.

Keep the treated area clean and follow the wound care instructions provided by your clinician. Daily cleansing and the use of Aquaphor will improve your wound healing. Once the skin has fully healed, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the area from UV exposure and to minimize post-inflammatory pigmentation. Avoid picking at or disturbing any scabs that form, as this can delay healing and increase the risk of scarring.

Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately or within 24 hours following treatment. Skin tag removal involves minimal to no downtime, making it a convenient option for even the busiest schedules.

To support proper healing, we recommend avoiding swimming, hot tubs, and saunas in the days following your procedure until the skin is fully healed. It’s also important to minimize prolonged moisture, friction, or sweating—especially in areas where skin folds are present—to reduce irritation and promote optimal recovery.

You may experience mild tenderness or sensitivity at the treated sites for a few days. This is completely normal and typically resolves quickly as your skin heals.
