Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Fine lines and wrinkles are a normal part of aging, and everyone will eventually develop wrinkles as they get older. As our skin changes over time, fine lines begin to appear in the areas where we make frequent facial expressions, like the forehead, eyes, and mouth. Fine lines turn into wrinkles with time and become more deep-set.
While the development of wrinkles is normal, many of us look in the mirror and feel that our fine lines and wrinkles make us look older or more tired than we feel. At Shine MD, we offer treatments that can not only soften fine lines and wrinkles but can also prevent wrinkles from developing or progressing in the future. Patients who receive these treatments often report increased satisfaction and confidence when they see a brighter and more energized face in the mirror.
What Causes Wrinkles?
Wrinkles are a by-product of aging, and they are influenced by many factors including skin type, sun exposure, and genetics. Our skin contains proteins called collagen and elastin that support the skin’s structure and give the skin its bouncy resilience. As we age, the collagen and elastin in our skin begin to break down more quickly. The quality of our collagen also changes. This causes the skin to lose its firmness over time.
The inner layer of the skin, also known as the dermis, gradually becomes thinner. The turn-over rate of our skin cells also slows with time, leading to weaker skin that is more prone to fine lines and wrinkles, as well as other signs of aging, like facial volume loss and skin laxity.
One of the factors that can accelerate the aging process is sun exposure. The sun emits harmful ultraviolet rays that break down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin and can cause other forms of sun damage like sunburns and dark spots. Frequent exposure to the sun without a protective SPF can cause wrinkles to develop more quickly.
Other factors that can influence the development of wrinkles include:
- Repeated facial expressions
- Skin type
- Stress
- Exposure to pollution
- Smoking
Wrinkles Treatment at Shine MD
Shine MD is here to help support you on your skin care journey, and we offer individualized treatment plans to soften fine lines and wrinkles and prevent future skin aging. Neuromodulators such as Dysport® and Botox® treat dynamic wrinkles that form when we move the muscles of the face. Neuromodulators relax muscle movement, lessening the appearance of existing wrinkles and preventing the formation of new ones. Commonly treated areas include the forehead and crow’s feet.
Laser-based treatments, such as Forever Young BBL™ and Halo™, can rejuvenate the skin by encouraging the production of new collagen and elastin, as well as the growth of new skin cells. These treatments are also research-proven to change the gene expression of skin cells to appear more youthful, slowing the aging process. Customized laser skin resurfacing treatments performed by Dr. Khurana can target areas of concern, such as the crow’s feet, under eye area, and around the mouth (peri-oral rhytides). Microneedling is another option that promotes collagen and elastin production to revitalize the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Combination therapy with neuromodulators and laser based treatments gives the highest yield results when approaching fine lines and wrinkles. For patients with mild to moderate wrinkles with a desire for a shorter downtime, the Halo Hybrid laser is often the treatment of choice. Contour TRL deep resurfacing treatments are the most definitive approach for long term improvement for patients with moderate to severe textural concerns such as deep wrinkles around the mouth or corners of the eyes. Facial resurfacing downtime is more significant and can come with 1 to 3 weeks of healing time and redness that can last for up to three months. Deep resurfacing can only be performed on lighter skin types.
