Lesion Removal in Vancouver
Cost, Recovery & Choosing the Right Clinic
If you’ve started researching lesion removal in Vancouver, you’ve probably arrived with a practical question in mind: How much does this cost? It’s a fair place to start. Patients want to know what to budget and whether MSP might cover the treatment.
We understand that cost and budget are important factors in helping patients decide where to go. Alongside cost, the other details worth weighing are the experience and knowledge of your provider, the technique and device selected for your particular lesion, and the post-care support that follows the procedure.
This page walks through what affects the cost of lesion removal in Vancouver, when MSP coverage applies, what recovery looks like, and how to choose the right clinic. For a full overview of the treatments themselves, see our main lesion removal page.
Provider Experience, Technique & Aftercare:
Why These Matter
While lesion removal is generally an uncomplicated procedure, the fine details that go into planning can affect your outcome and patient satisfaction.
Those decisions are where the experience of your provider, the technique or device selected for your specific lesion and the aftercare protocol all come into play.
Shine MD is a physician-led medical skin care clinic in Vancouver. Lesion removal here is performed by experienced physicians. This makes a meaningful difference in several ways:
- Lesions are properly identified before treatment. Skin tags, moles, seborrheic keratoses, DPN, and sebaceous hyperplasia each may require different approaches and techniques.
- Concerning features can be recognized. Moles that are asymmetrical, irregular, rapidly changing, itchy, or bleeding may warrant biopsy and pathology rather than cosmetic removal.
- Treatment is tailored to your skin type. Pigmentation risk varies significantly between skin types, and method selection can make an impact.
- MSP-covered care is integrated where appropriate. When a lesion has medically significant features, removal and pathology are coordinated as a covered benefit through the BC Medical Services Plan, with a referral from your family physician or a walk-in physician.
Under the leadership of Dr. Mona Khurana, Shine MD has become a trusted Vancouver destination for both cosmetic and medical lesion treatment. Dr. Khurana has a special interest in pigmentary disorders and skin of colour — a focus that shapes how every lesion removal at the clinic is planned and performed.
The Methods Used at Shine MD
Method selection is one of the most important parts of any lesion removal plan, and one of the reasons cost varies between cases. The right tool depends entirely on the lesion, its location, and your skin type. Our toolkit includes:
- Electrocautery is most frequently used to gently shave away and lift many types of lesions, with minimal trauma to surrounding skin. This is the treatment of choice for skin tags, seborrheic keratoses and dermatosis papulosa nigra, with particular attention to pigmentation outcomes in skin of colour.
- Erbium laser is used to precisely vaporize tissue and is the physician’s first line choice for milia, sebaceous hyperplasia, syringoma and smaller skin colored lesions where patients do not want injectable numbing
- Surgical excision. This will always be recommended for pigmented moles and for those with features suspicious for skin cancer. This is a classic excision with sutures.
- Liquid nitrogen is a cold gas that is sprayed onto the skin. This can be applied to seborrheic keratoses. Over the following weeks, the lesion will fall off. Multiple treatments may be required for larger or deeper skin lesions.
Electrocautery and surgical excision are performed under local injectable anaesthesia, and most patients describe minimal discomfort during treatment after the numbing has been injected.
What Affects the Cost of Lesion Removal in Vancouver?
One of the most common assumptions patients arrive with is that a smaller lesion should cost less than a larger one. In reality, the cost of removing a lesion is largely the same regardless of its size, the time, supplies, anaesthesia, sterile setup, and physician’s attention are the same regardless of the size. For that reason, lesion removal at Shine MD is priced per lesion, not per size.
The main factors that do affect cost are:
- The removal method – Electrocautery and Erbium laser removals are priced differently from punch excision, because the technique, equipment, and aftercare are different.
- The number of lesions – Each additional lesion treated in the same session has a lower add-on cost since we are already set up for the procedure
- The complexity of the case – Larger treatment areas with multiple or densely clustered lesions are priced based on the complexity of the case, the density of the lesions, and the time required to treat them safely.
- Cosmetic vs. medical concern – Cosmetic removal is priced privately. Medically indicated removal and pathology may be covered by MSP.
- Skin type – Treatment plans for skin of colour incorporate additional protocols to minimise pigmentation risk. This expertise is built into the standard plan rather than charged separately.
Shine MD Lesion Removal Pricing
Pricing at Shine MD is structured around the method used. The base prices below give patients a clear starting point before consultation:
- Consultation Fee – $250 if you prefer to come see the physician for a physical assessment and decide not to proceed with treatment.
- Electrocautery or Erbium laser removal — $500 for the first lesion, and $200 for each additional lesion treated in the same session.
- Punch excision — $650 for the first lesion, and $300 for each additional lesion treated in the same session.
For larger treatment areas — for example, a back with many lesions, or a dense cluster on the face or neck— pricing is determined on a case-by-case based on the complexity of the work and the time required. A consultation provides a clear, accurate quote before any treatment is booked.
These prices reflect cosmetic lesion removal. When a lesion has medically significant features and meets MSP criteria, removal and pathology are coordinated as a covered benefit rather than a private fee, with a referral from your family physician or a walk-in physician.
Can You Get an Exact Price Before a Consultation?
In most cases, yes — and you don’t necessarily have to come in to find out.
For uncomplicated lesions and simple removals, our team is able to assess suitability and pricing directly from clear photos sent by email. The team reviews the photos with physician oversight when needed, identifies the most appropriate method, and replies with accurate pricing and procedure information. This makes it easy to plan your treatment before booking, without committing to an in-person visit upfront.
For larger treatment areas or cases involving multiple lesions, our team will provide a pricing range based on the photos, with the final cost confirmed in person. An in-person assessment is also recommended when:
- A lesion has features that warrant dermoscopy or a closer clinical evaluation
- The concern may be medically necessary rather than cosmetic
To request a photo-based assessment, contact our team at info@shinemd.com with clear, well-lit images of the lesion and a short description of your concern. We’ll get back to you with the most likely method and a price.
If you prefer to have an in person consultation, the fee is $250. This fee will be applied to the cost of your treatment if you choose to proceed with the lesion removal on the same day.
On treatment day, the physician will review your lesion(s) and have a discussion with you regarding the options available to you and only proceed with treatment once you have a full understanding of your options.
Does MSP or Insurance Cover Lesion Removal?
In British Columbia, coverage depends on whether the removal is cosmetic or medically necessary.
Medically necessary removals — for example, a mole that is changing, irregular in colour or border, or otherwise suspicious — may be covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP). A referral from your family physician or a walk-in physician is required for assessment at Shine MD. When medically indicated, the lesion is removed as a medical biopsy and sent for pathology — a covered benefit.
Cosmetic removals — where the lesion is benign and removed purely for appearance — are not covered by MSP.
What to Expect During Recovery
Recovery is part of the value of treatment, and one of the areas where the clinic’s approach is most noticeable. After most lesion removals:
- The treated area takes about 5-7 days to fully heal.
- A scab typically forms within 1–2 weeks and then resolves.
- Mild redness can persist for several weeks, particularly after laser or electrosurgery, and continues to improve gradually.
- Silicone gel sheets are often recommended to support healing and reduce redness or scarring.
What to Expect Based on Skin Type
- Darker skin tones: Temporary post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkening of the treated area) may occur. This can be minimized with diligent sun protection, including sunscreen and sun avoidance. Targeted skincare and advanced laser treatments can help accelerate fading.
- Lighter skin tones: You may notice temporary redness or pink discoloration (post-inflammatory erythema) at the treatment site. This is a normal part of healing and gradually resolves over time. The improvement can be accelerated with Broad Band Light (BBL) laser or Aerolase treatments.
Wound remodeling continues for up to a year after the procedure, with the appearance of the area improving over time.
A post care kit and post care instructions are included in your care plan.
Deciding Where To Go For Your Lesion Removal
A few things to consider:
- Some lesions sit in highly visible areas where even a small scar or pigmentation change is noticeable. We favor conservative approaches when possible.
- Skin of colour requires specific expertise to minimize post-inflammatory pigmentation changes, which can be long-lasting. Shine MD is specifically equipped with technologies and protocols designed to safely treat the full spectrum of skin colour.
How We Approach Lesion Removal at Shine MD
Our approach prioritizes:
- Conservative, precise techniques designed to minimize visible marks
- Method selection guided by the lesion and skin type.
- Attention to skin of colour, including proactive management of post-treatment pigmentation
- Transparent pricing
- Coordination with MSP-covered biopsy and pathology when medically indicated
Frequently Asked Questions
Not at Shine MD. The time, supplies, anaesthesia, sterile setup, and physician’s attention required to remove a lesion are largely the same regardless of its size. For that reason, lesion removal is priced per lesion rather than per size. What does affect the cost is the removal method and the total number of lesions treated in the session.
At Shine MD, mole removal pricing depends on the method used. Electrocautery or Erbium laser removal starts at $500 for the first lesion, with $200 for each additional lesion in the same session. Punch excision starts at $650 for the first lesion, with $300 for each additional lesion. The cost is per lesion rather than based on its size. Medically necessary mole removal with pathology is covered by MSP with a referral, rather than charged privately.
MSP covers medically necessary lesion removal and biopsy when there are concerning features and a referral is in place from your family physician or a walk-in physician. Cosmetic removals are not covered. Whether your specific lesion qualifies depends on an in-person assessment.
Sometimes. A benign lesion removed for appearance is cosmetic. A lesion that has features concerning for skin cancer will be deemed medically necessary and will be covered by MSP. The classification matters both clinically and for MSP coverage.
Laser removal isn’t automatically more expensive. The Erbium laser is often used alongside other methods or independently.
Multiple lesions can often be treated in a single visit, especially when they’re small and similar in type — for example, several skin tags or a cluster of DPN. The exact number depends on the lesions, your skin type, and how your skin tolerates treatment. Treating several at once is also typically more cost-effective per lesion and minimizes downtime for you as a patient.
Some skin changes will be present after any lesion removal. The goal is to minimize it. The Ellman Surgitron and Erbium laser are specifically chosen for their precision, and silicone gel sheets are often recommended afterward to support healing. Most redness fades over weeks to months, and skin remodeling continues for up to a year. Additional skin care and laser treatments can augment your healing journey.
Get Started
If you’re considering lesion removal in Vancouver, the next step depends on your situation. You can email our team clear photos of the lesion to receive a method recommendation and quote without coming in. When a closer look is helpful, our team will recommend an in-person consultation before booking.
Regardless of the advice given by our intake team, the physician will independently assess your lesion on treatment day and review your treatment plan with you before proceeding. This step ensures a thorough discussion of your goals and preferences, confirms the right approach for your skin, and supports a fully informed consent process before any treatment begins.
Contact Shine MD by email at info@shinemd.com to share photos for a quote, or book a consultation if you’d prefer to be assessed in person.
