What Causes Skin Laxity?
Skin laxity is an inevitable part of aging, and everyone will eventually experience its effects. This is due to the natural breakdown of the proteins collagen and elastin in our skin. These proteins are key components of our skin’s firmness and structure, and they give our skin the ability to bounce back into place after it has been stretched.
As we age, collagen and elastin start to break down more quickly, but they are not actively replaced by the body. Over time, our skin loses its resiliency and becomes more vulnerable to gravity and stretching. As we get older, this is noticed most in areas such as the undereyes, nasolabial folds, jowls and neck.
While aging is unavoidable, there are other external factors that can influence the firmness of our skin and contribute to premature skin aging, including:
