Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes flushing, redness, itching, burning, and stinging. Papulopustular rosacea is often mistakenly treated as acne. In this case, the treatments commonly used for acne will irritate sensitive rosacea skin.

Learn More About Rosacea

It is unknown what causes people to develop rosacea, but there are certain risk factors associated with rosacea. According to a study published in the Journal of The European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, the risk factors for rosacea are skin types that are photosensitive, family history of rosacea, and a history of smoking.

There are also triggers that can lead to rosacea flare-ups, including:

  • Extreme weather conditions
  • Sunlight or heat
  • Hot drinks and spicy food
  • Exercise
  • Alcohol
  • Irritating skin products

Each person is unique, and different people may experience different flare-up triggers.

  • Cleanse your skin twice daily with a gentle skin cleanser.
  • Moisturize your skin twice daily to improve the skin barrier.
  • Wear sunscreen daily. The sun can often trigger a flare of rosacea.
  • Avoid the use of products containing alcohol, camphor, glycolic acid, lactic acid, menthol, and sodium laurel sulfate.
  • Avoid toners and astringents.
  • Retinols are often too harsh on sensitive rosacea skin.
