Medical assessment and acne management is a covered benefit by the Medical Services Plan of British Columbia. To receive medical management of your acne, you will require a referral from a primary care provider such as your family physician or a walk in clinic physician.
Please see the MSP Referral Form for detailed information regarding our referral process for medical skin conditions. Once you have obtained a referral from your primary care provider, Shine MD will contact you to book an appointment for initial MSP covered consultation with a physician. The current waiting time for medical acne based care is 4-6 months.
We also offer supportive treatments (such as skincare, facials, and laser treatments) that are not covered by the provincial health plan. In person and virtual care options are available.

Acne begins in the hair follicles of our skin. Excess sebum, the oily substance produced by our skin, and dead skin cells can build up inside the hair follicles, clogging the pore. This creates an environment for bacteria to grow, leading to inflammation. Increased sebum production, blockage of the skin glands, the presence of acne causing bacteria, and inflammation combine to create what we know as a pimple. Common forms of acne include:
- Whiteheads
- Blackheads
- Papules
- Pustules
- Nodules
Acne also ranges in severity. The most minor forms of acne are whiteheads and blackheads. These types of acne are usually not inflamed or painful. As acne lesions progress, they become more inflamed and form papules, pustules, and nodules. These are often painful and extend deeper into the skin.
