Platelet-Rich Plasma and Platelet Rich Fibrin

At Shine MD Skin Care, we specialize in advanced, non-surgical aesthetic treatments to help you achieve radiant, youthful skin. Two of the most popular regenerative therapies we offer are Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PPF).

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), commonly referred to as liquid gold, is used to enhance cellular rejuvenation. Platelet-rich plasma treatments harness the natural healing abilities of the body by using your own concentrated blood products to revitalize damaged tissue, reduce inflammation, and promote collagen production. Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a similar treatment that extracts fibrin from your blood and enables an even more powerful and long-lasting effect.

The physicians at Shine MD can use PRP and PRF to fade the appearance of scars, revitalize the skin, and promote hair growth.

The most common applications for PRP at Shine MD are:

  • Hair restoration
  • Subcision with PRP for acne scarring
  • Under-eye rejuvenation

How Does Platelet-Rich Plasma Work?

The liquid portion of our blood is called plasma. It transports proteins, nutrients, and hormones and carries the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets throughout the body. Platelets are a type of blood cell that is known for their clotting and healing abilities. To prepare PRP and PRF, physicians extract a small amount of your blood and process it in a machine called a centrifuge, which separates the other components of the blood from the plasma and platelets, creating PRP. Shine MD utilizes the World PRP collection system, which is deemed to produce some of the highest quality PRP with no additives or gels.

The concentrated platelets can then be injected under the skin to stimulate cell reproduction and promote healing. The platelets release growth factors that cause cell renewal and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the treated area. This powerful combination can repair damaged tissue, fade the appearance of scars, improve the skin’s texture and vibrance, and stimulate hair growth.

What is Platelet Rich Fibrin?

PRF is also obtained from your blood sample, but contains a higher concentration of platelets, fibrin, and white blood cells. It is injected under the skin to help boost collagen production and is most commonly used for the undereyes and other areas of the face where volumization and collagen production are desired.

PRP vs. PPF

PRP vs. PPF: Which Treatment is Right for You?

Both treatments harness the power of your body’s natural healing processes, but PRF has a slower release of growth factors and is considered to be more biostimulatory. Let’s explore the differences between PRP and PRF to help you decide which treatment is best for you.

PRP

  • Reduces fine lines, and wrinkles, and improves skin texture.
  • Decreases inflammation and promotes wound healing
  • Improves pigmentation in some patients

PRF

  • Complements PRP for enhanced regenerative effects.
  • Provides structural support to the skin.
  • Ideal for patients seeking subtle, natural-looking volume. It can be a “natural” alternative to filler treatments.

Which Treatment is Right for You?

The choice between PRP and PRF depends on your specific skin concerns and goals. At Shine MD Skin Care, our expert providers will assess your skin and recommend the best treatment plan for you. Here’s a quick guide:

Choose PRP if:

  • You want to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, or acne scars.
  • You’re experiencing hair thinning or loss.
  • You’re looking for overall skin rejuvenation.

Choose PRF if:

  • You need subtle volume restoration in areas like the under eyes, cheeks, and acne scars.
  • You want to improve skin elasticity and firmness.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is rich in platelets and growth factors, making it ideal for skin rejuvenation, hair restoration, and scar reduction. PRF contains more fibrin, white blood cells and stem cells, making it better suited for volume restoration, skin tightening, and structural support.

Yes, both PRP and PRF are safe because they use your own blood, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions or infections. At Shine MD Skin Care, we follow strict safety protocols to ensure a comfortable and risk-free experience. Many patients prefer PRP and PRF because there are no artificial ingredients and the treatment is derived from your own blood.

Both treatments have minimal downtime. You may experience mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, but these side effects typically resolve within 24-48 hours. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.

The lasting effects of PRP and PRF are variable from patient to patient and the condition being treated. Results are often cumulative over multiple treatments and ideally improve over time. There is variability in response to treatments and patients must factor this in prior to starting their treatment plan.

The procedure involves minimal discomfort. The treatment is delivered with a needle and a cannula. If you are nervous or worried about pain, laughing gas can be used.

Good candidates for PRP or PRF include:

  • Individuals looking for natural, non-surgical skin rejuvenation.
  • Patients seeking subtle volume restoration with PRF.
  • Anyone with acne scars, fine lines, or wrinkles.

The cost varies depending on the area being treated and the number of sessions required. During your consultation, we will provide a detailed cost estimate based on your personalized treatment plan.
